Keeping your work area secure.
While at home, there aren’t many security risks; however, the busy office affords security procedures that must be in place. Just as you shouldn’t want anyone having access to the files and documents on your desk, you wouldn’t want them to gain access to the files and documents on your computer.
Whenever you leave your desk, proper security dictates that you lock your system, by pressing the following combination: CTRL + ALT + DEL. Then choose “Lock Computer” on the popup screen.

This will lock your station. To unlock your station, click on CRTL + ALT + DEL and enter your password.

One crucial element to security is that only you are authorized to use your account. Should someone else need a COB account or any other computer account, there are procedures in place to obtain one. Allowing others to use your account is a breach of security and a violation of RIT's Code of Conduct for Computer and Network Use. Should something happen, your account would be associated with the issue, leaving us no way to track another user.
Please remember to keep tabs on your files, even if they aren’t on your system. Documents on diskettes and CDs can be just as damaging if certain information on them is sensitive. That is why we recommend storing files on your P: (personal) drive on the network, where it is secure and backed up.
In addition to these suggestions, please make sure you lock your office door when you are not in it. It is very easy for someone to walk by and help themselves to a few pieces of computer equipment or documents on the desk. Keeping your office locked helps prevent anything from being stolen.
