Windows XP Security Settings

With the growing number of remote attacks on computers, it is important to make sure that your home systems are secure as well as your office systems. The following contains instructions on a few things you can do to help secure your home computers running Windows XP.

Start by clicking Start and then Control Panel



Then click on Performance and Maintenance



Then click on Administrative Tools



Then double-click on Local Security Policy



This will open the Local Security Settings window. From here, click on the Security Options under Local Policies on the left-hand side.
Then scroll down until you find the options outlined in red on the right-hand side. Double-click on each item and set them to the following:

  • Network access: Allow anonymous SID/Name translation: Disabled
  • Network access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts: Enabled
  • Network access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts and shares: Enabled
  • Network access: Do not allow storage of credientials or .NET Passwords for network authentication: Enabled
  • Network access: Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users: Disabled
  • Network security: Do not store LAN Manager hash value on next password change: Enabled
  • Network security: Force logoff when logon hours expire: Disabled
  • Network security: LAN Manager authentication level: Send NTLMv2 responses only\refuse LM & NTLM




  • Reboot your system and the settings should now be set.
